Why Pray?
By Pastor Kent Janz

The first prayer that I ever
learned was at the Dinner table. It went
like this…
“Come Lord Jesus be our guest, let this food
to us be blessed.”
A simple prayer that I had
memorized by the time I was 3 years old.
Today my own children know that same prayer.
In fact, prayer at the dinner table has
become somewhat of a ritual.
Now I have to wonder, is that
what prayer is - a habit?
Matthew 21:12-13 tells the story
of how Jesus went to the temple. He
discovered that the place where people went to meet
God was not being used the
way that it should – so he let his displeasure be known.
Jesus says some words that tend
to cut deep. Jesus said, “My house shall
be called a house of prayer, not a den for robbers.”
Why do we pray? We pray because that is what Jesus truly
wants from us. He wants us to be in a
relationship with Him. He
wants to hear
what is on our hearts.
It is interesting that Jesus did
not say, “My house shall be called a house of Preaching, or of singing, or a
place to go out of habit.”
Jesus just
wanted to have it known, that He desires a relationship with each one of us.
When you meet God this week,
wherever that may be, remember that Jesus loves you. His desire is simple. Jesus just wants us to talk to him.
